It's hard to believe that foods most of us eat and enjoy every day can be harmful to others. No one knows exactly why, but more and more kiddos are becoming severely allergic to certain foods.

HISD takes very seriously, the health and welfare of each student.  Since 2006 HISD implemented through Health Services guidelines for auto-injector epinephrine in the school setting. (HISD Wellness and Health Services Medical Treatment FFAC (legal))  Standing orders for the school nurse to administer auto-injector epinephrine signed by the district physician accompany the guidelines.  Every student who requires an epi-pen meets the following HISD requirements: allergy action plan annually updated, current physician orders and must provide their own epi-pen to be kept in the nurse's office or other special considerations from physician orders.

HB 742 addresses food allergy information.  The bill outlines definitions of severe food allergy, who is able to disclose such information to enable a district to take any necessary precautions regarding the child's safety, specify the food to which the child is allergic and the nature of the allergic reaction, maintenance of the confidential information and appropriate school personnel to inform, physician documentation and entering such information into the student record.
