The role of the school nurse in the life of a diabetic student can be one of educator, monitor and facilitator.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in the school-aged child that impairs the body's ability to use food for energy.  Careful monitoring of the blood glucose level is needed for the diabetic student. Each campus nurse plays an important role in helping students manage their diabetes.

We have two types of action plans available for HISD diabetic students.  For those students who are newly diagnosed or additional information needs to be relayed from the physician to the campus nurse, choose the "long" management and treatment plan.

Have your child's physician fill out the "short" management and treatment form IF your child's diabetes is well controlled.

HISD is in full compliance with HB 984 specified for the care of elementary and secondary students with diabetes.
Each campus has fully trained unlicensed diabetes care assistants and the Transportation department, as well as the child's school bus driver, are made aware of the student's health condition.  In-service education may be offered to any faculty and staff who have a student with diabetes in their classes, under their supervision, or at school-sponsored function.
