Anyone can get head lice. They are not a sign of being dirty, in fact,
head lice love clean straight hair! Having a case of head lice is not considered a sign of uncleanliness or bad parenting.
Unfortunately, head lice can easily spread from person to person by direct contact. HISD follows Department of Safety
and Health guidelines when dealing with lice.
A student with live head lice will be removed from the classroom and the parents will be
called to come to school and pick up their child or make necessary arrangements for the child's transportation.
The infested student will be readmitted to the classroom after
the following criteria has been met:
- The student
has received one treatment with a recognized and appropriate shampoo such as Rid or Nix.
- For students PK-8th grade, parents must accompany the student to the nurse's office with proof of appropriate
head lice treatment.
Bus privileges are suspended for the student until cleared by the campus nurse as
to being live lice free. - The student's hair
has been examined by the campus nurse or the Health Services designee and found to be free of live lice.
REMEMBER!! A second treatment of the student's hair
should be repeated in 7-10 days. The student will be rechecked at that time by the campus nurse.
If a student shows repeated problems with infestation, the student may be considered chronic
and additional steps may be taken as set forth by HISD Administrative policy. This may include, but not limited to:
removal from the classroom until "checked clear" by the nurse, bus rights suspended until student is free of
live lice and truancy issues.
